mRNA COVID-19 Vaccination Recommended for Fall/Winter 2023

As the Fall and Winter virus season approaches the USA, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) today reaffirmed vaccination remains the best protection against COVID-19-related hospitalization and death. 

This is the first season where vaccines are available for the three viruses responsible for most hospitalizations: COVID-19, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV), and Influenza.

Furthermore, the CDC says the betacoronavirus that causes COVID-19 constantly changes, and protection from COVID-19 vaccines declines over time.

To address this issue, two mRNA COVID-19 vaccines were approved today.

On September 12, 2023, the CDC's Director Mandy Cohen, M.D., M.P.H., stated in a press release. "We have more tools than ever to prevent the worst outcomes from COVID-19."

"The CDC is now recommending updated COVID-19 vaccination for everyone six months and older to protect you and your loved ones better."

Most people in America can still get a COVID-19 vaccine for free.

For people with health insurance, most plans will cover COVID-19 vaccination at no cost to you.

People who don't have health insurance or with health plans that do not cover the cost can get a free vaccine from their local health centers, state, local, tribal, or territorial health departments, and pharmacies participating in the CDC's Bridge Access Program.

Children eligible for the Vaccines for Children program also may receive the vaccine from a provider enrolled in that program.
