The global outbreak of acute hepatitis of unknown origin among children continues in various countries. However, as of May 4, 2022, it is not yet clear if there has been an increase in hepatitis cases or an increase in awareness of hepatitis.

While adenovirus is a possible hypothesis, investigations are ongoing for the causative agent, says the World Health Organization (WHO).

"As of May 1, at least 228 probable cases were reported to WHO from 20 countries, with over 50 additional cases under investigation," WHO spokesman Tarik Jasarevic told media reporters in Geneva on May 3, 2022.

He stated that most of the mysterious adenovirus - hepatitis cases are from Europe, but there are others in the Americas, the Western Pacific, and Southeast Asia.

In the U.S., the state of Alabama was the first to report cases to the U.S. CDC in October 2021.

Since then, several states, including but not limited to California, Illinois, Minnesota, North Carolina, and Wisconsin, have confirmed cases in children.
